WG 6: Testing & Certification

WG6 Testing and Certification

This work package is concerned with activities that aim to provide an overview of test facilities and evaluation methodologies and their implications to end user requirements with respect to the existing standards. Standardisation is needed for reducing costs and improving reliability of components and interoperability of data and protocols in biometric systems. Heightened international security concerns give the need for biometric standardisation and security evaluation a sense of urgency. BEST NETWORK will link into most relevant existing activities and organisations. This is not only achieved engaging test- and research labs, but also by engaging institutions like CEN, NIST, ISO JTC1 (SC27, SC37,..), etc. In addition, the network builds further on the results of EU funded projects like MTIT and BioTesting Europe.

The activities and objectives include:
- take up recommendations of BioTesting Europe, a preparatory action in the field of security research (PASR-2006)
- share experiences and identify best practices in testing and security evaluation of biometric technologies,
- refine the methodology for the security evaluation of biometric products, in particular for providing evidence of resistance against a ‘high’ or ‘middle’ attack potential in accordance with the Common Criteria,
- provide advice in security evaluations of biometric products based on the recommended methodology
- contribute to the international standardisation related to the security evaluation methodology for biometric products
- organise workshops for building consensus and for the dissemination of the recommended security evalua¬tion methodology for biometric technologies

- current status of standardisation
- applicability, usability and testability of standards
- end user requirements and specifications
- testing of performance and conformity
- biometric systems evaluation
- multi modality
- health and safety
- benchmarking and white lists
- test methodologies for systematic evaluation of spoof resistance
- certified building blocks enabling hierarchical system assessment
